DESCRIPTION
The OPTICON LCR MK2 has a particularly flat cabinet optimized for wall mounting and is suitable for a wide range of applications. Thus, the speaker can be used in a home cinema for the left, right and center channels in the front, but also for the surround channels in the back. In addition, the OPTICON LCR MK2 cuts a fine figure as a conventional stereo speaker or as a supplement for a TV set.
The bass-midrange driver with its 165 mm (6 1/2″) wood-fiber cone and an SMC pole piece, the rotatable hybrid tweeter module and the sophisticated bass reflex system that incorporates the wall complement each other to form a perfectly matched ensemble that does far more than one would expect from such a compact speaker. With airy highs, expressive mids, and surprisingly deep-reaching bass, the OPTICON LCR MK2 is a wall speaker with full-fledged hi-fi sound characteristics.
The OPTICON LCR MK2 is available in the cabinet variation white matt, ash black and tobacco oak.
SMC MAGNET SYSTEM
DALI SMC (Soft Magnetic Compound) is a coated magnetic granulate that can be shaped into almost any desired form and offers numerous advantages when used in Speaker. SMC is characterized by a very unusual combination of very high magnetic permeability and very low electrical conductivity. These are exactly the desired features for the magnets of our Speaker. They reduce electroacoustic distortion to a considerable degree.
The use of SMC reduces eddy currents in the pole piece of the magnet system, which are caused by the movement of the voice coil around the pole piece. They generate a secondary magnetic field that modulates the input signal and results in increased harmonic distortion. In addition, SMC also improves flux linearity within the magnet system, reduces magnetic hysteresis and minimizes inductance variations of the voice coil depending on its position. All in all, the advantages of SMC mentioned above lead to a significant reduction of colorations and overlays, especially at low listening levels.
HYBRID TWEETER
FABRIC CALOTTE
The 29 mm fabric dome is a new development based on the tweeter of the CALLISTO series. The slightly larger diameter results in a significant increase in the sound-emitting diaphragm area, which is accompanied by lower distortion, higher power handling and a downwardly extended frequency range. The use of an identical tweeter dome in all six OPTICON MK2 models not only results in a consistent sound character – it also enables a crossover topology that is similar across all models, resulting in a uniform dispersion pattern.
The new OPTICON MK2 fabric dome allows the crossover frequency to be lowered to 2 kHz without fear of distortion or limitations in power handling. An extremely thin magnetic fluid provides high resonance damping and higher power handling without compromising the impulse response speed of the particularly lightweight, coated diaphragm.
HYBRID TWEETER
The redesigned hybrid tweeter of the OPTICON MK2 series combines a 29 mm fabric dome adapted from the CALLISTO speaker with a newly developed 17 × 45 mm ribbon. Both tweeters are mounted on a cast aluminum plate, which also ensures optimal horizontal dispersion.
The hybrid tweeter is tuned so that the ribbon radiates all frequencies above 14 kHz – below that the fabric dome intervenes in the musical action. The ribbon extends the frequency response of the overall system up to 30 kHz and at the same time improves the horizontal dispersion at the highest frequencies in a way that would otherwise not be possible. The new hybrid tweeter combines the best of both worlds: the clarity, speed and dynamics of a dome tweeter and the detail and finesse of a ribbon tweeter.
MID-WOOFER
The OPTICON LCR MK2 uses a 165 mm (6 1/2″) mid-bass driver that features DALI’s patented SMC magnet system and the reddish shimmering wood fiber cone. This consists of a mixture of paper and wood fibers, which ensures minimal breakage resonances and gives the membranes their unmistakable DALI trademark color. A particularly flexible rubber surround allows free diaphragm movement with minimal low-frequency damping.
The extremely rigid and low-resonance basket of the driver is made of die-cast aluminum. It is designed in such a way that, on the one hand, it does not obstruct the airflow inside the cabinet in any way and, at the same time, it ensures an extremely firm mechanical connection with the Speakerclosure.
The magnetic system of the OPTICON LCR MK2 consists of a large ferrite ring magnet surrounding a pole piece made entirely of the unique DALI SMC material. The pole piece and ferrite magnet are fixed between the soft iron front and back plates to create the appropriate magnetic field for the voice coil.
HOUSING
Each OPTICON MK2 cabinet has been optimized for maximum stiffness and minimum surface resonance. The 25 mm thick baffle of the OPTICON LCR MK2 provides optimal, unshakable working conditions for the drivers mounted inside.
The Speaker of the OPTICON MK2 series are manufactured at DALI in Denmark. Our in-house woodworking facility covers all aspects of manufacturing; from cutting and routing of MDF case parts to surface finishing and assembly. The installation of the drivers and crossovers, as well as the final quality testing and approval for each individual Speaker, are also carried out on our own production lines.
The reflex ports of the wall speaker are not made with dual-flare tubes, but no less carefully thought out. Placement directly on the wall requires a completely different approach. For example, although the reflective openings are located in the rear wall, they are designed to radiate along the wall rather than against it. In this way, the surface of the wall becomes an integral part of the bass reflex system.
