High power woofer

Let’s start at the bottom (in the frequency spectrum): The woofers of the Emit 50 live up to their name. Two 18 cm diameter units of the type also used in the Emit 20 are used in each Emit 50. This uses technologies developed for our high-end Evoke, Contour i and Confidence product families. They offer an amazing bass performance that clearly surpasses the predecessor. This means that the speaker really goes down in the bass range (specifically: -3 dB at 33 Hz – a value that you, as a number-loving Dynaudio fan, will be familiar with from our Contour 60i and Confidence 60 Speaker). Nevertheless, the cabinet has decidedly living room-suitable dimensions.

The one-piece diaphragms are made of magnesium silicate polymer (MSP) – a material developed by Dynaudio itself. The dust cap is not glued on either, but is part of the diaphragm. The fact that the diaphragm is made from one piece and not glued together allows a much better connection between the reproduction surface and the voice coil behind it. And that, in turn, leads to better controllability: less unwanted distortion and resonance occurs. Instead, more details become audible – even in the lower bass range.

Unlike the other speakers in the product family, we use copper voice coils for the woofers of the Emit 50. This is because they don’t have to act quite as nimbly as their counterparts in other models (such as the Emit 20), which also cover the mids. Therefore, we can use copper – a heavier material that allows more “punch”. The woofers’ “dual stacked” magnet system is optimized to deliver energy directly to the voice coil.

Dedicated midrange

The midrange is completely different. It is based on the midrange driver of the Evoke series, which in turn inherited it from our high-end Contour product family. It features a powerful ferrite ceramic magnet, a short 38mm diameter version of the aluminum voice coil optimized for the midrange, and a lightweight surround.

This midrange is tuned for speed and precision – features that make it ideal for nuanced vocals, violins, wind instruments and much more that you want to hear en detail.

The tweeter: Highly pleasing

In the Emit 50 we use the Cerotar tweeter. Connoisseurs will know that it comes from our Evoke series. Key technologies developed for our award-winning anniversary speaker Special Forty, for the legendary Confidence, and for the professional studio reference monitors of the Core series are used here. Our developers are really proud of this tweeter – and rightly so.

A literally supporting element for the 28 mm diameter fabric tweeter is another Dynaudio innovation: the Hexis. This sophisticated, dimpled inner dome is placed so close behind the fabric of the diaphragm that it can prevent the reflection of unwanted resonances to the back of the playback surface. This ensures a balanced frequency response and flawlessly transparent, silky highs. Here the details of your favorite recordings become audible.

The “heart” of the Cerotar tweeter is a powerful ferrite+ strontium carbonate ceramic magnet, which makes it act particularly nimble. This creates an even more realistic image of the original recording in front of your ears. You hear what you are supposed to hear – no more, no less. And because the sound is so natural and not “spiced up”, fatigue does not set in so quickly. So you can enjoy your favorite music even longer.

Clever crossovers

The crossover of the Emit 50 is a hybrid design. It initially includes a traditional first-order Dynaudio circuit for the tweeter, a second-order design for the midrange and a fourth-order topology for the woofers. Of course, we could have used a simple “one size fits all” variant – but that would have required compromises in playback quality that our developers are simply not prepared to make.
