The goal: stiffness and high vibration damping
The platter offers high mechanical stiffness combined with high vibration damping. Vibration-damping rubber covers the entire back of the die-cast aluminum platter. Therefore, no resonances spread across the turntable. The sound of the records remains absolutely pure. Along a simulation, the shape of the aluminum plate casting was optimized. Inertial mass has been increased and vibration reduced. At 2.5 kg (including rubber pad), the turntable of the SL-1210GR is 0.8 kg heavier than that of the SL-1200MK5. The cast aluminum platter is also infused with reinforcing ribs on the back to increase rigidity. Since the contact area between the aluminum platter and the vibration-damping rubber layer has been increased, the damping characteristics exceed those of the SL-1200MK5 by more than double.
Perfect fusion of classic analog with pioneering digital technologies
Traditional analog technology fused with the latest digital innovations – that’s what the launch of the SL-1200G in 2016 represents. Essential assemblies were newly developed. The result: exceptional playback quality that redefined the standard for direct-drive turntable and amazed the experts. The SL-1200GR also benefits from this groundbreaking technology. Individual components of the SL-1200G were newly developed for the SL-1200GR. For example, the coreless direct drive motor and precise motor control technology. It eliminates the disturbing cogging torque caused by irregularities in the rotary motion. Also new are the low-vibration, torsion-resistant platter and the high-precision tonearm. The playback quality of the SL-1200GR clearly exceeds the usual standard of its class. Audio enthusiasts will rediscover the warm and full sound of analog vinyl records.
High-precision motor control for maximum speed stability
The speed control monitors the constancy of the rotation and readjusts it if necessary. This uses the latest control technologies, which are also used in Panasonic Blu-ray players and the SL-1200G. Sine waveforms stored in ROM drive the motor at a constant speed. This makes the rotation more uniform than with a simple sine wave generator with an external coil, as used in the SL-1200MK5. In addition, the electronic circuit design has been further optimized so that the newly developed motor of the SL-1210GR operates under perfect conditions. The starting torque reaches 2.2 kg-cm (0.22Nm) with only a single rotor. The start-up time of 0.7s (up to 33 1/3 rpm) is thus identical to the SL-1200G.
Coreless direct drive motor for high speed stability
Technics launched the world’s first direct-drive turntable in 1970. A real revolution in the HiFi world. This is because, unlike belt and friction wheel drives, in direct-drive systems the motor rotates at low speeds and drives the platter directly. Neither engine vibrations nor friction losses within transmission mechanisms interfere with power transmission. Noise emissions remain exemplary low. Since there are no moving parts to maintain, the direct drive is also very durable.
In 2016, the experts paid attention once again. Technics surprised with a coreless direct drive motor that used a very flat twin rotor on either side of the stator coils. Since the stator coils now had no iron core, the cogging torque that occurs due to magnetic interactions could be eliminated. This “cogging” common with direct-drive turntable was thus a thing of the past. The new engine was developed for the SL-1200G and caused a sensation in the hi-fi market. The technology was also the inspiration for the SL-1210GR. It uses a less complex coreless direct drive motor with a single rotor that is also free of cogging.
Chassis with high rigidity and vibration-absorbing silicone damping feet for pure sound and good protection against shocks
The die-cast aluminum chassis is firmly bonded to the BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) lower shell. This two-layer caabinet ensures high rigidity. As with the SL-1200G, special silicone rubber is used for the damping feet that support the chassis. It causes high vibration damping and good long-term resistance. Vibrations in the horizontal direction are absorbed by a cylindrical guide ring made of small-cell polymer. This process, which originated in the SL-1200G, has been specially adapted to the SL-1210GR. The height of the damping feet is adjusted via threaded screw bolts. This avoids the vibrations that occur when the turntable is placed on a shelf, for example. Perfect horizontal alignment of the platter also ensures maximum mechanical rotational stability without disturbing imbalances.
Highly sensitive tone arm
The tonearm scans the grooves of the record with ultimate precision. It uses the statically balanced S-shaped tonearm traditionally used in Technics turntable. The tonearm tube is made of a light and rigid aluminum profile. The tonearm bearing is gimbaled. Similar to the SL-1200G, the bearing legs consist of high-precision milled parts. The needle bearings for the bearing axles are of the highest precision. Thanks to the highest manufacturing precision, as it is only possible by the skill of experienced special forces, and the fine adjustment of experienced specialists, a sensitivity of less than 5 mg is achieved. The sampling process of the record thus runs with extreme sensitivity. For a wide range of pickup systems, an auxiliary weight is included in addition to the main counterweight. Thus, a generous selection of pickup systems is possible depending on the music style. (Insertable cartridge weight using the additional counterweight: 10 – 16.4 g, headshell not included).
