Uni-Q
The use of a tweeter in the acoustic center of the midrange speaker brings us closer to the acoustic ideal of a point source. The new R Series features the new 12th generation Uni-Q driver developed with KEF’s proprietary simulation and analysis tool. KEF’s acoustic engineers were able to lower coloration by avoiding resonances in the transition gap between the tweeter and midrange of the Uni-Q driver. The resulting sound reproduction is even more precise and provides a much better stereo image.
SHADOW FLARE
The “Shadow Flare” is a direct descendant of the Reference Series and represents an innovative method of reducing damaging diffraction at the cabinet edges in the high frequency range. The “Shadow Flare” is a precisely profiled sound reflection surface that enhances the Uni-Q’s point source effect. As a result, the tweeter is no longer in the reflection range of the cabinet edges, creating a shadow area at these points of potentially highest diffraction. This design measure allows, among other things, more details of percussion or string instruments to be perceived.
LOW FREQUENCY DRIVER
Bass is the musical foundation on which everything is based, which is why improving bass performance is an essential component of a flawless sound. The R-Series diaphragms have a two-piece construction, with a flat, concave aluminum foil applied to a paper diaphragm. The resulting stiffness, combined with the unique geometry, delivers a movement that provides pressure and speed – similar to the piston of an engine. To drive this particularly powerful diaphragm, KEF has completely redesigned the magnet system to create an even more uniform magnetic field. The end result is overwhelming.
HOUSING CONSTRUCTION
For excellent sound, a stable cabinet is necessary. The new R series benefits from a new vibration damping system. This system uses internal clamps connected to a damping interface. The damping is extremely effective in dissolving unwanted vibrations that would otherwise alter the music in unwanted ways.
TECHNOLOGY OF THE FLEXIBLE BASS REFLEX TUBE
In producing deep, clear bass, the design of the bass reflex tube plays an important role. The R-Series bass reflex tubes feature an innovative, flexible wall. Computational Fluid Dynamics is used to calculate the aperture and profile each port to avoid turbulence, while the flexible bass reflex tube prevents longitudinal resonances from coloring the midrange.
