The History of Bowers & Wilkins

In 1966, John Bowers and Roy Wilkins founded the now globally known Bowers & Wilkins company.

As always, it all started small. Bowers & Wilkins began as a service-oriented electronics business. Of course, no one could have predicted at the time that the assembly of loudspeaker systems would later become one of the best-known producers of high-quality loudspeaker systems worldwide.

The only clue could have been the philosophy that has been upheld to this day. Durability, quality and direct service are still core elements of Bowers & Wilkins.

The first loudspeaker | Bowers & Wilkins P1

With the development and distribution of the P1, the foundation for the company's growth and capabilities was laid in the year of its founding.

John Bowers reinvested the profits from the P1 and used the fresh capital to buy new, better calibration equipment.

The new technology paid off, because only 2 years later the DM1 and DM3 models were created

Bowers & Wilkins | DM1 and DM3

With the new loudspeaker models DM1 & DM3, Bowers & Wilkins made the leap into the living room.

The futuristic design, at least futuristic for the late 1960s, was a small revolution on the hi-fi market. But as advanced as the technology seemed, the engineers at Bowers & Wilkins were still at the beginning of their creativity.

The 1970s

The Decade of Milestones

  • The DM70 | The new way of loudspeaker design

With the DM70, Bowers & Wilkins presented a new way of looking at loudspeakers. The curved design was adopted across the industry and continues to inspire to this day.

  • 1976 was the birth year of the Bowers & Wilkins DM6

The DM6 loudspeaker was designed by Sir Kenneth Grange and was the first Bowers & Wilkins system to use aramid fiber as the membrane material.

  • The first time – “Tweeter on Top” at DM7

As early as 1977, the idea of removing the tweeter from the speaker housing and placing it on top of the speaker came about.

This innovative line of thinking prevailed and to this day you can still find the “Tweeter on Top” of the flagship speaker series.

  • 1976 was the birth year of the Bowers & Wilkins DM6…

...also describes the birth year of the modern HiFi era. The already successfully implemented "Tweeter on Top" concept was the conceptual basis for accommodating the chassis in separate chambers in the 801 loudspeaker.

Goosebumps thanks to studio quality | The B&W 700 series

Music. Movies. Television. The 702 S2 is equipped with the same high-quality, studio-grade technologies as the 800 Series Diamond and delivers sound so high that your living room becomes a real sound oasis.

A House for High Frequencies

The solid-state tweeter enclosure is machined from a solid block of aluminum, creating an acoustically optimized enclosure for the tweeter – one that is exceptionally rigid and resonance resistant.

Higher detail sharpness

Carbon Dome tweeters are specifically designed for the 700 Series. They provide a huge improvement on the aluminum twin dome tweeter, raising the resolution threshold to 47 kHz and delivering precise imaging and pinpoint detail.

B&W the 800 series

Want more performance?

The 803 D4 has all the characteristic features of the 800 Series Diamond, which of course includes the unmistakable Turbine Head cabinet. However, it is slightly smaller than the other two models with a head. The 802 D4, for example, offers larger bass cones (200 mm / 8 inches) and a larger midrange driver (150 mm / 6 inches).

Instead of a conventional speaker shape…

...the housings have a continuously rounded wooden front, in the middle of which the driver units are mounted. This stiffer, more acoustically neutral structure counteracts mechanical resonances much better and also has a positive effect on sound radiation.

Optimized Matrix™

Matrix bracing uses interlocking plates to reinforce the speaker's cabinet walls in every direction. This reduces resonance and creates a more realistic sound. The 803 D4 features what is probably the best matrix construction to date, ensuring optimal bandwidth, power and speech intelligibility.

aluminum bass surrounds

The 803 D4 features dual Aerofoil™ cones with two massive aluminum bass surrounds, each clamped into an aluminum plate in the stiffest part of the curved cabinet. These extremely rigid structures, formed from a single piece of metal, are the ideal location for the powerful bass cones.
