The overhang adjustment template is used to find the correct distance from the stylus tip to the tonearm pivot point.

When aligning a cartridge using the overhang adjustment template, it is important to remember to align the cantilever (and thus the needle) and not the cartridge body. There is no guarantee that the cantilever will be perfectly aligned within the cartridge body, so a Simply aligning the pickup body does not necessarily lead to the desired result.

An overhang alignment jig is a plastic template that has the zero point(s) and tangent lines printed on it that the cartridge is to be aligned against. The template is placed over the spindle of the turntable (made possible by a spindle-sized hole drilled in the template) and placed against the platter.
