Buy speakers from the HIFI-PROFIS

We know it all too well: being spoiled for choice. In contrast to when we were founded, there is now a much larger selection of loudspeakers. bookshelf speakers , compact speakers , floor-standing speakers , wireless and/or streaming-capable Speakers… The question quickly arises: which speaker or speakers should I buy? As always, tastes differ. Today, you no longer just choose a brand that was once recommended to you. Newcomers are often faced with a decision forest that resembles a thicket. Here, a  personal and individual advice . We would therefore like to give you some information and tips on buying loudspeakers. If you still have any questions, one of our loudspeaker professionals is available for a personal consultation. We are always happy to pass on knowledge and are only satisfied when you are, too.

How do speakers work?

Loudspeakers are sound transducers. They convert electronic signals into vibrations that generate sounds through the air. Modern loudspeakers achieve this using membranes, an electronic coil as a drive and particularly strong permanent magnets. This means that music, random noises and conversations can be encoded in an electronic signal and output as sound via loudspeakers. The following happens on the technical side:
  • 1. Current flows through the electrical coil and thereby creates an electromagnetic field.
  • 2. This electromagnetic field influences the permanent magnets installed. These are pulled in or pushed out by the field changes.
  • 3. The membrane is attached to the moving magnets and moves in the same rhythm, i.e. the same frequency. It thus sets air in motion, which is expressed in audible sound waves.
However, the quality of the sound, as well as the functionality and application area of the loudspeakers, depends on a number of other factors. So here is a short introduction to the basic terms relating to loudspeakers and sound reproduction:

Which speaker should I buy?

In order to answer this admittedly not particularly easy question in detail, you will probably not be able to avoid a personal consultation. And our loudspeaker, HiFi & high-end professionals are already looking forward to it! But we would like to give you some help in making your decision and provide you with an overview that will help you find the right speaker for you.

Only big speakers deliver big sound?!

We need to clear up this fallacy. Of course you are right that large speakers also offer a particularly comprehensive sound, as their weight and volume mean they have a low-vibration and expansive sound body. But in many cases it is worth looking at compact and bookshelf speakers, because who of us has a concert hall as their living room? In addition, speaker technology today already allows for super-compact systems. In many cases, this is even possible without any loss of sound experience. In the early eighties, many of the now common speaker configurations and concepts would have been considered completely out of the question.

What is the difference between active and passive speakers?

passive speakers

A term that is often heard but rarely misunderstood by non-professionals is the distinction between active and passive loudspeakers. Here we clarify: Passive loudspeakers are also considered "the old form" or the classic construction of loudspeakers. Passive in this context means that the loudspeaker cannot be used without one or more external (pre-)amplifier works. Passive speaker chassis only contain the tweeter, midrange and woofer, and are therefore on average a little cheaper than active speakers. However, the purchase of a power amplifier is mandatory, which puts the purchase costs into perspective.

active speakers In contrast to passive speakers, they are equipped with their own integrated amplifiers and, in some cases, active crossovers. The extremely short distances from the amplifier to the driver enable transmission with almost zero power loss. The active crossovers distribute the signals to the various drivers based on their frequency range. This prevents sounds from mixing and the tweeters, midrange speakers and woofers can each work in their optimal range without influencing each other.

Which speaker should I buy if I don't want cables?

If you want to buy speakers, you have probably already thought about whether you should get something “modern” or “practical”. Only a few years ago, the wireless speaker solutions especially in HiFi and high-end areas were frowned upon because the loss of power and the latency, i.e. the delay in signal transmission, sometimes affected the listening experience immensely. What has changed? As history has shown, the innovative power in this industry has always been extremely high. This is also reflected today in the Bluetooth & WLAN Speakers. With the introduction of high-frequency transmitters and receivers, high power loss and limited sound reproduction are a thing of the past. Unfortunately, most wireless speakers are still trapped in closed systems, so third-party providers such as Apple's AirPlay have to be used. The big advantage here, however, is that the systems are uncompromisingly coordinated in their communication with and among each other. This means that you can buy a closed but well-coordinated system. The biggest criteria when buying wireless speakers are no longer the sound quality, but rather aesthetic and functional aspects, which can basically only be answered individually.

The load capacity of the speakers

The load capacity of loudspeakers, or wattage (“RMS power” or “nominal load”) should match the power of the amplifier or receiver. To be on the safe side, the rule of thumb is: Better a little too much than too little power when Amplifier/receiver . Damage caused by insufficient power is usually only noticed when it is already too late.

speaker efficiency

The efficiency describes the ratio of acoustic to electronic power. The louder you turn the volume, the louder the speaker sounds. Speakers with low efficiency require a powerful amplifier to produce the same level of acoustic power.

What does impedance mean in loudspeakers?

The impedance indicates how much power the amplifier must provide to get sounds out of the loudspeaker. Pay attention to the specification in ohms (Ω). Common specifications for loudspeakers are 4-8 ohms. Important: It is ideal if the loudspeaker impedance is equal to the resistance of the amplifier/receiver If it is below this, both components can be damaged.

The frequency range of the loudspeaker

As explained above, loudspeakers convert electrical signals into frequencies that move the air so that we can hear sounds. A perfect loudspeaker can in this case cover all frequencies perceptible to the human ear. The spectrum ranges between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. To ensure that it remains precise and that the respective frequencies can be reproduced exactly, this frequency range is distributed in 2- or 3-way loudspeakers via a crossover to the tweeters, midrange speakers and/or woofers.
The constant development of membrane material and innovative research into other possible materials today create impressive precision and variety in sound reproduction. Even the quietest sigh and throat clearing can be reproduced. The ever smaller membranes opened up the possibility of constructing 7.1.2 soundbars or similarly spectacular inventions.

Our conclusion on buying speakers:

floor-standing speakers Due to their physical properties, they produce a more balanced sound than compact or bookshelf speakers and at first glance also outdo wireless speaker systems . However, they are only suitable for larger rooms, as you would have to place the speakers up to one meter away from walls for optimal sound development. Shelf and compact speakers, on the other hand, are perfect for medium-sized (around 24m^2) and smaller rooms, as they are designed to use the nearby reflection surfaces, such as a shelf or corners and rear walls, as radiation surfaces to complete the sound. Of course, the location and type of setup or installation must also be taken into account with wireless systems in order to exploit the physical properties of the room and the speakers in such a way that the best possible sound image is produced. However, wireless speakers offer the greatest flexibility here. In addition, private music collections are becoming increasingly digitalized. Therefore, it makes sense to network the entire home. Finally, no more "where do I hide the cable now?"... assuming, of course, that you already have the right speaker cable to connect your newly purchased loudspeakers in a worthy manner. But don't worry. As explained at the beginning, when you buy loudspeakers, a personal consultation, by phone or in writing, will always offer you the best support in finding exactly the right loudspeaker for you. If you live near Darmstadt, you can always test the loudspeakers. The listening experience speaks for itself. We look forward to your visit!
